وَٱلنَّـٰزِعَـٰتِ غَرْقًۭا
Wal-nāziʿāti gharqan
By those [angels] who extract with violence
79:1
Noun
وَٱلنَّـٰزِعَـٰتِ
By those who extract
wal-nāziʿāti
Noun
غَرْقًۭا
violently
gharqan
وَٱلنَّـٰشِطَـٰتِ نَشْطًۭا
Wal-nāshiṭāti nashṭan
And [by] those who remove with ease
79:2
Noun
وَٱلنَّـٰشِطَـٰتِ
And those who draw out
wal-nāshiṭāti
Noun
نَشْطًۭا
gently
nashṭan
وَٱلسَّـٰبِحَـٰتِ سَبْحًۭا
Wal-sābiḥāti sabḥan
And [by] those who glide [as if] swimming
79:3
Noun
وَٱلسَّـٰبِحَـٰتِ
And those who glide
wal-sābiḥāti
Noun
سَبْحًۭا
swimming
sabḥan
فَٱلسَّـٰبِقَـٰتِ سَبْقًۭا
Fal-sābiqāti sabqan
And those who race each other in a race
79:4
Noun
فَٱلسَّـٰبِقَـٰتِ
And those who race each other
fal-sābiqāti
Noun
سَبْقًۭا
(in) a race
sabqan
فَٱلْمُدَبِّرَٰتِ أَمْرًۭا
Fal-mudabirāti amran
And those who arrange [each] matter
79:5
Noun
فَٱلْمُدَبِّرَٰتِ
And those who arrange
fal-mudabirāti
Noun
أَمْرًۭا
(the) matter
amran
يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ
Yawma tarjufu l-rājifatu
79:6
Verb
تَرْجُفُ
will quake
tarjufu

ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ
the quaking one
l-rājifatu
تَتْبَعُهَا ٱلرَّادِفَةُ
Tatbaʿuhā l-rādifatu
There will follow it the subsequent [one].
79:7

ٱلرَّادِفَةُ
the subsequent

قُلُوبٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ وَاجِفَةٌ
Qulūbun yawma-idhin wājifatun
Hearts, that Day, will palpitate.
79:8

وَاجِفَةٌ
will palpitate

أَبْصَـٰرُهَا خَـٰشِعَةٌۭ

Their eyes humbled.
79:9

أَبْصَـٰرُهَا
Their eyes

خَـٰشِعَةٌۭ
humbled
khāshiʿatun
يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِى ٱلْحَافِرَةِ
Yaqūlūna a-innā lamardūdūna fī l-ḥāfirati
They say, "Are we indeed to be returned to the former state [of life]?"
79:10

ٱلْحَافِرَةِ

"Even if we should be decayed bones?"
79:11

أَءِذَا
What! When

نَّخِرَةًۭ

قَالُوا۟ تِلْكَ إِذًۭا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌۭ
Qālū tilka idhan karratun khāsiratun
They say, "That, then, would be a losing return."
79:12

(would be) a return

خَاسِرَةٌۭ

فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌۭ وَٰحِدَةٌۭ
Fa-innamā hiya zajratun wāḥidatun
Indeed, it will be but one shout,
79:13
Particle
فَإِنَّمَا
Then only
fa-innamā

زَجْرَةٌۭ
(will be) a shout

وَٰحِدَةٌۭ

wāḥidatun
فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ
Fa-idhā hum bil-sāhirati
And suddenly they will be [alert] upon the earth's surface.
79:14

And behold

بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ
(will be) awakened
bil-sāhirati
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ
Hal atāka ḥadīthu mūsā
Has there come to you the story of Moses?
79:15

When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa,
79:16

"Go to
Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed."
79:17

وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ
Wa-ahdiyaka ilā rabbika fatakhshā
"And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?'"
79:19

وَأَهْدِيَكَ
And I will guide you
wa-ahdiyaka

فَتَخْشَىٰ
so you would fear

فَأَرَىٰهُ ٱلْـَٔايَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ
Fa-arāhu l-āyata l-kub'rā
Then he showed him the greatest sign,
79:20

فَأَرَىٰهُ
Then he showed him
fa-arāhu

فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ
Fakadhaba waʿaṣā
But he denied and disobeyed.
79:21

وَعَصَىٰ
and disobeyed
waʿaṣā
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَىٰ
Thumma adbara yasʿā
Then he turned his back, striving.
79:22

يَسْعَىٰ
striving
yasʿā
فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ
Faḥashara fanādā
And he gathered [his people] and called out
79:23
Verb
فَحَشَرَ
And he gathered
faḥashara

فَنَادَىٰ
and called out
fanādā
فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
Faqāla anā rabbukumu l-aʿlā
And said, "I am your most exalted lord."
79:24

فَقَالَ
Then he said

ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
the Most High
l-aʿlā
فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَٱلْأُولَىٰٓ
Fa-akhadhahu l-lahu nakāla l-ākhirati wal-ūlā
So Allah seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first [transgression].
79:25

فَأَخَذَهُ
So seized him

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةًۭ لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰٓ
Inna fī dhālika laʿib'ratan liman yakhshā
Indeed in that is a lesson for whoever would fear [Allah].
79:26

ءَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ ۚ بَنَىٰهَا

Are you a more difficult
creation or is the
heaven? He constructed it.
79:27

79:28

وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا
Wa-aghṭasha laylahā wa-akhraja ḍuḥāhā
And He darkened its
night and extracted its brightness.
79:29
Verb
وَأَغْطَشَ
And He darkened
wa-aghṭasha
Verb
وَأَخْرَجَ
and brought out
wa-akhraja

ضُحَىٰهَا
its brightness
ḍuḥāhā
وَٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ
Wal-arḍa baʿda dhālika daḥāhā
And after that He spread the
earth.
79:30

دَحَىٰهَآ
He spread it
daḥāhā
أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرْعَىٰهَا
Akhraja min'hā māahā wamarʿāhā
He extracted from it its water and its pasture,
79:31

أَخْرَجَ
He brought forth
akhraja

وَمَرْعَىٰهَا

وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَرْسَىٰهَا

79:32

وَٱلْجِبَالَ

أَرْسَىٰهَا
He made them firm
arsāhā
مَتَـٰعًۭا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ
Matāʿan lakum wali-anʿāmikum
(As) a provision for you and for your
cattle79:33

(As) a provision

وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ

But when there comes the Overwhelming Calamity, the greatest,
79:34

Yawma yatadhakkaru l-insānu mā saʿā
The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,
79:35

يَتَذَكَّرُ

سَعَىٰ
he strove (for)
saʿā
وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلْجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ
Waburrizati l-jaḥīmu liman yarā
And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see -
79:36

وَبُرِّزَتِ
And will be made manifest
waburrizati

the Hellfire

لِمَن
to (him) who

فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ
Fa-ammā man ṭaghā
So as for he who transgressed
79:37

وَءَاثَرَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا
Waāthara l-ḥayata l-dun'yā
And preferred the life of the
world,
79:38

وَءَاثَرَ
And preferred
waāthara

ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ
the life
l-ḥayata
فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ
Fa-inna l-jaḥīma hiya l-mawā
Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.
79:39

فَإِنَّ
Then indeed
fa-inna

ٱلْجَحِيمَ
the Hellfire

ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ
(is) the refuge
l-mawā
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفْسَ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ
Wa-ammā man khāfa maqāma rabbihi wanahā l-nafsa ʿani l-hawā
But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the
soul from [unlawful] inclination,
79:40

وَأَمَّا
But as for
wa-ammā

مَقَامَ
standing

رَبِّهِۦ
(before) his Lord
rabbihi

وَنَهَى
and restrained
wanahā
Noun
ٱلْهَوَىٰ
the vain desires
l-hawā
فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَنَّةَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ
Fa-inna l-janata hiya l-mawā
Then indeed,
Paradise will be [his] refuge.
79:41

فَإِنَّ
Then indeed

ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ
the refuge
l-mawā
يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَىٰهَا
Yasalūnaka ʿani l-sāʿati ayyāna mur'sāhā
They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?
79:42

يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ
They ask you
yasalūnaka

ٱلسَّاعَةِ
the Hour
l-sāʿati
Noun
مُرْسَىٰهَا
(is) its arrival
mur'sāhā
فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكْرَىٰهَآ
Fīma anta min dhik'rāhā
In what [position] are you that you should mention it?
79:43

(to) mention it

إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَىٰهَآ
Ilā rabbika muntahāhā
To your Lord is its finality.
79:44

(is) its finality
muntahāhā
إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰهَا
Innamā anta mundhiru man yakhshāhā
You are only a warner for those who fear it.
79:45

إِنَّمَآ

(are) a warner

يَخْشَىٰهَا

كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوٓا۟ إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَىٰهَا
Ka-annahum yawma yarawnahā lam yalbathū illā ʿashiyyatan aw ḍuḥāhā
It will be, on the Day they see it, as though they had not remained [in the world] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof.
79:46

كَأَنَّهُمْ
As though they

يَرَوْنَهَا
they see it

يَلْبَثُوٓا۟
they had remained
yalbathū

an evening
ʿashiyyatan

a morning thereof
