SURAH MA’UN BRIEF COMMENTARY & BACKGROUND

This Surah has 7 verses. It takes its name from verse 7: “وَيَمْنَعُونَ الْمَاعُونَ” (And withhold [simple] assistance) where the word “الماعون” meaning “Assistance” appears. This Surah was revealed in Mecca. There is a difference of opinion as some commentators of the Quran say that this Surah was revealed in Madina.

This Surah narrates two of the primary teachings of the religion of God, How you Pray: either to please God or to show off, and How you Give: Either for Charity to please God, Withholds, Or give only to show off. Religion means taking care of others, helping the poor and the needy.  The Surah tells us that the pure belief in God and the Judgement Day create a compassionate and sympathetic character. Disbelief in the Last Day and Hereafter is the main cause of evil-doing, and not caring for others.

In verse 5  الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنْ صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ “who are heedless of their prayer” It could mean delaying the Prayers, not fulfilling its conditions OR praying but not considering the exact spirit and message of it. This verse has all these meanings in it. Whoever has any aspect of this, then a portion of this verse applies to him.

This is just as is confirmed in the two Ahadiths that the Prophet of God PBUH  who said, This is the prayer of the hypocrite; this is the prayer of the hypocrite; this is the prayer of the hypocrite. He sits watching the sun until it is between the two horns of Devil. Then he stands and hits four Rakahs, and he does not remember God in them except very little.
