SURAH IKHLAS BRIEF COMMENTARY & BACKGROUND

This Surah has 4 verses. Name is not taken from any word in the verses of this Surah. But given because of the content of it which is pure Monotheism and Definition of One God. This Surah was revealed in Mecca.

الإخلاص  Sincerity, purity is Monotheism and definition of Tawheed and one God. It is a declaration of God’s absolute oneness, consisting of four verses.

Ahmad bin Hanbal recorded from Ubayy bin Kab that the polytheists said to the Prophet of God, “O Muhammad! Tell us the lineage of your Lord.” So God revealed  …..قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

Bukhari Narrated from Aisha: “Whenever the Prophet went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ,  قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ   قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ ,  and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face, and front of his body. He used to do that three times.

Anas bin Malik narrated that some Jews of Khaiber came before the Prophet of God PBUH and said: “O Abul Qasim, God created the angels from light, Adam from rotten clay, Iblis from the flame of fire, the sky from smoke, and the earth from the foam of water. Now tell us about your Lord (of what He is made).”The Prophet of God PBUH did not give any reply to this question. Then Angel Gabriel came, and he said: “O Muhammad, say to them: قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ.

Amir bin Tufail said to the Prophet of God PBUH: “O Muhammad, what do you call us to?”The Holy Prophet replied: “To Allah.”Amir said: “Then, tell us of what He is made, whether of gold, silver, or iron?” Thereupon this Surah was sent down.

Anas ibn Malik and Ibn Abbas reported Prophet of God PBUH said that إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا  is equivalent to half the Quran,  قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ is equivalent to a third of the Quran, and  قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ is equivalent to a quarter of the Quran.

Abu Said has narrated that he heard the Prophet saying: “Isn’t every one of you able to recite one-third of the Quran during a night?” They thought it was tough, so they asked: “Who can do that, O Apostle of God?” He responded: “He is God, the One and Only is one-third of the Quran

Bukhari narrated from Anas bin Malik “A man from among the Ansar led the Prayers in the Quba Mosque. His practice was that in every rakah he first recited this Surah and then would join another Surah to it. The people objected to it and said to him:”Don’t you think that Surah Ikhlas is by itself enough? Why do you join another Surah to it? You should either recite only this Surah or should leave it and recite some other Surah. He said: “I cannot leave it, I would rather give up leadership in the Prayer if you so desired. At last, the matter was brought before the Prophet of God PBUH. He asked the man, “What prevents you from conceding what your companions desire? What makes you recite this particular Surah in every rakah?”The man replied: “I have a great love for it.”The Holy Prophet remarked: “Your this love for this Surah has earned you entry into Paradise.”
