NAME: الزخرف, Az-Zukhruf.

Name taken from Verse 35 where there is a mention of the word “Az-Zukhruf”.

٣٥  وَزُخْرُفًا ۚ وَإِنْ كُلُّ ذَٰلِكَ لَمَّا مَتَاعُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ۚ وَالْآخِرَةُ عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
35  And gold ornament. But all that is not but the enjoyment of worldly life. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.

But It does not mean that this name is the actual topic discussed in the whole Surah. It is just a reference and mark/symbol to distinguish this Surah from others as is with most other Surahs of Quran. While there are diversified topics discussed in these Surahs.

SURAH ZUKHRUF KEY VERSES:

٣  إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

3  Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur’an that you might understand.

٤  وَإِنَّهُ فِي أُمِّ الْكِتَابِ لَدَيْنَا لَعَلِيٌّ حَكِيمٌ

4  And indeed it is, in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.

٣٣  وَلَوْلَا أَنْ يَكُونَ النَّاسُ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً لَجَعَلْنَا لِمَنْ يَكْفُرُ بِالرَّحْمَٰنِ لِبُيُوتِهِمْ سُقُفًا مِنْ فِضَّةٍ وَمَعَارِجَ عَلَيْهَا يَظْهَرُونَ

33  And if it were not that the people would become one community [of disbelievers], We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful – for their houses – ceilings and stairways of silver upon which to mount

٣٦  وَمَنْ يَعْشُ عَنْ ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَانًا فَهُوَ لَهُ قَرِينٌ

36  And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful – We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.

٥١  وَنَادَىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ فِي قَوْمِهِ قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ أَلَيْسَ لِي مُلْكُ مِصْرَ وَهَٰذِهِ الْأَنْهَارُ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِي ۖ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ

51  And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, “O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see?

٥٢  أَمْ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِنْ هَٰذَا الَّذِي هُوَ مَهِينٌ وَلَا يَكَادُ يُبِينُ

52  Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear?

٧٧  وَنَادَوْا يَا مَالِكُ لِيَقْضِ عَلَيْنَا رَبُّكَ ۖ قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ مَاكِثُونَ

77  And they will call, “O Malik, let your Lord put an end to us!” He will say, “Indeed, you will remain.”

SURAH ZUKHRUF BRIEF COMMENTARY & BACK GROUND:

This Surah has 89 verses divided into 7 Rukus/Sections. Name of the Surah comes from the word “زُخْرُفً” in verse 35 which means Ornaments of Gold. As discussed in previous Surah summary this Surah is one among those seven Surahs of Quran which starts with the word “حم” These are Surah Ghafir, Fussilat, Shura, Zukhuruf, Dukhan, Jathiyah and Ahqaf.  The word/letters “حم”.  are called Mystery Abbreviated Letters OR Hurrof Al Muqattat. A brief introduction of which is already given in Quran Statistics & Facts.

This Surah revealed in Mecca almost the same time as of Surah Ghafir, Fussilat and Surah Shura around 4th to 7th year of Prophethood. The Surah made a severe criticism on Quraysh and the common Arabs creeds and superstitions, especially regarding associating females and Angels To God. The Surah tells that the revelation is a mercy of God, and God chooses whosoever He wills to convey His revelation. It warns and admonishes People for their blind adherence to the faith of their forefathers.

The Holy Prophet PBUH said: For the one who recites this Surah (And Fully Acts Upon it), it would be said on the Day of Judgment: O servant! There is no fear for you on this day, and you will not be grieved, enter the Paradise.
