2:8: See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

3:12-13: Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

4:5-6: Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

COLOSSIANS SUMMARY

Colosse was a small town in Asia Minor about 100 miles from Ephesus. Colosse was a dying city. Several hundred years before, it had been a flourishing town, but the booming neighboring cities of Laodicea and Hierapolis diminished its economic importance. Paul had never been there but it is likely that the church there was started by Epaphras a convert by Paul during Paul’s extended stay in Ephesus and then Epaphras returned home to tell the people in Colosse the good news. The most likely imprisonment that Paul refers to in this letter is his Roman custody, which dates the letter’s composition around 60 AD. This letter Paul wrote in response of heresies that came in his attention especially the deification of Angels and to declare in extremely favorable terms the superiority of Jesus Christ over other tempting powers. Paul states that these are ideas based on human tradition and are therefore worthless. He presents Jesus Christ as the supreme creator of all things who is entirely God in every way. Jesus has made peace with God and restored a right relationship with the Father through his blood shed on the cross.

A Synthesis of Religions: The Case of God

Praise belongs to God, the Lord of all realms, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the One who shaped the human being from clay and breathed into him of His Spirit; the One who sent Messengers, one after another, bearing truth, guidance, and the balance, so that mankind may stand upon justice and not transgress its bounds.

Here is a discourse meant not to conquer but to illuminate,
Not to divide but to gather,
Not to exalt the writer but to exalt the Word of God. So approach with hearts unburdened,
 With intellects awakened,
With spirits yearning for the Mercy of the All-Merciful. For the earth endures by His command,
 And knowledge is a trust,
And every soul shall be returned to its Lord.
