23  And never say of anything, “Indeed, I will do that tomorrow,”

24  Except [when adding], “If Allah wills.” And remember your Lord when you forget [it] and say, “Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct.”

46  Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one’s] hope.

97  So Gog and Magog were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration.

98  [Dhul-Qarnayn] said, “This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true.”

99  And We will leave them that day surging over each other, and [then] the Horn will be blown, and We will assemble them in [one] assembly.

109  Say, “If the sea were ink for [writing] the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement.”

SURAH KAHF BRIEF COMMENTARY & BACK GROUND

This Surah has 110 verses divided into 12 Rukus/Sections. This Surah was revealed in Mecca almost five years before Prophet Muhammad’s migration to Yathrib (Madina). This was the time when the opposition of Meccans turned from verbal accusations and abuse to physical and socio-economic torture and bans. This is the time when many Muslims migrated to nearby country of Abasinya and Prophet himself along with his close family members were seized in “Shaib Abi Talib.”

It is narrated in traditions that this Surah was revealed as a reply to a question which Meccans asked Prophet Muhammad on the advice of Jews regarding “Sleepers of the Cave” “Story of Khidr” and “Zulqurnain” as these legends were there in the books of Israelites, but Arabs had no previous knowledge of them. They asked it as a test to make the prophet embarrassed of his ignorance. But not only God revealed him the true story of all these but also simultaneously comforted the believers and warn the disbelievers that God is all powerful to change the situation and that God knows the unseen and reality is hidden from you.

Ahmad Ibn Hanbal recorded that: “A man recited Surah Kahf and there was an animal in the house which began acting in a nervous manner. He watched, and saw a cloud overhead. He decsribed this to the Prophet , who said:

Keep on reciting so and so, for this is the tranquility which descends when one reads Quran or because of reading Quran.

The Prophet said:

Whoever recites Surat Kahf as it was revealed, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection.
