SURAH ADIYAT BRIEF COMMENTARY & BACKGROUND
This Surah has 11 verses. It takes its name from verse 1: “وَالْعَادِيَاتِ ضَبْحًا” ( By the racers, panting) where the word “العاديات” meaning “The Chargers/The Racers” appears. This Surah was revealed in Mecca most probably during the early days of Muhammad’s proclamation of his Prophethood. There is a difference of opinion as some commentators of the Quran say that this Surah was revealed in Madina.
This Surah begins by swearing an Oath of “العاديات” The racers, chargers or any cavalry mode of ride that is used in a war, and narrates beautifully that although all these beings are not conscious beings like Humans but despite that only because man gives them food/fuel they become ready to sacrifice themselves for him and enter in the battlefield without their personal interests or gains. But you O human being despite God has blessed you with conscious and with the blessing of true knowledge thru his revelations even then how ungrateful you are towards your Lord. It also tells that God is aware of all the unknown and hidden secrets of human souls, and He will reveal them on the Day of Judgment.
