وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ
Wannajmi idha hawa
By the
star when it descends,
53:1
Verb
هَوَىٰ
it goes down
hawā
مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ
Ma dalla sahibukum wama ghawa
Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,
53:2

ضَلَّ

غَوَىٰ
has he erred
ghawā
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ
Wama yantiqu 'ani al-hawa
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
53:3

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌۭ يُوحَىٰ

53:4

عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ
Allamahu shadidu al-quwa
Taught to him by one intense in strength -
53:5

the (one) mighty

ٱلْقُوَىٰ
(in) power

ذُو مِرَّةٍۢ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ
Dhu mirratin fastawa
One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form
53:6

فَٱسْتَوَىٰ
And he rose
fa-is'tawā
وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
Wahuwa bil-ufuqi al-a'la
While he was in the higher [part of the]
horizon.
53:7

the highest

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ
Thumma dana fatadalla
Then he approached and descended
53:8

فَتَدَلَّىٰ
and came down
fatadallā
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ
Fakana qaba qawsayni aw adna
And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.
53:9

(of) two bow-(lengths)

فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ
Fa-awha ila 'abdihi ma awha
And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed.
53:10

فَأَوْحَىٰٓ
So he revealed
fa-awḥā
Noun
عَبْدِهِۦ
His slave
ʿabdihi
Verb
أَوْحَىٰ
he revealed
awḥā
مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ
Ma kadhaba al-fu'adu ma ra'a
The heart did not lie about what it saw.
53:11

ٱلْفُؤَادُ
the heart

أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ
Afatumarunahu 'ala ma yara
So will you dispute with him over what he saw?
53:12

أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ
Then will you dispute with him
afatumārūnahu
وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ
Walaqad ra'ahu nazlatan ukhra
And he certainly saw him in another descent
53:13

And certainly

53:14

ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ
(of) the utmost boundary
l-muntahā
عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ
Indaha jannatu al-ma'wa
Near it is the Garden of Refuge -
53:15

Near it
ʿindahā

جَنَّةُ
(is the) Garden
jannatu
Noun
ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ
(of) Abode
l-mawā
إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ
Idh yaghsha as-sidrata ma yaghsha
When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it].
53:16

مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ
Ma zagha al-basaru wama tagha
The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].
53:17

it transgressed

لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ
Laqad ra'a min ayati rabbihi al-kubra
He has certainly seen of the greatest signs of his Lord.
53:18

ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ

Afara'aytumu al-lata wal-'uzza
So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza?
53:19

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ
So have you seen
afara-aytumu

ٱللَّـٰتَ
the Lat

وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ
and the Uzza
wal-ʿuzā
وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ
Wamanata ath-thalithata al-ukhra
And Manat, the third - the other one?
53:20
Noun
وَمَنَوٰةَ
And Manat
wamanata
Noun
ٱلثَّالِثَةَ
the third
l-thālithata
Noun
ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ
the other
l-ukh'rā
أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ
Alakumu adh-dhakaru walahu al-untha
Is the male for you and for Him the female?
53:21

أَلَكُمُ
Is for you
alakumu

ٱلذَّكَرُ
the male

وَلَهُ
and for Him

ٱلْأُنثَىٰ
the female
l-unthā
تِلْكَ إِذًۭا قِسْمَةٌۭ ضِيزَىٰٓ
Tilka idhan qismatun diza
That, then, is an unjust division.
53:22

قِسْمَةٌۭ
(is) a division
qis'matun
إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌۭ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ
In hiya illa asma'un sammaytumuha antum wa-aba'ukum ma anzala Allahu biha min sulṭanin in yattabi'una illa aẓ-ẓanna wama tahwa al-anfusu walaqad ja'ahum min rabbihimu al-huda
They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.
53:23

ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ
the guidance

أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ
Am lil-insani ma tamanna
Or is there for man whatever he wishes?
53:24

لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ
(is) for man
lil'insāni
Verb
تَمَنَّىٰ
he wishes
tamannā
فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ
Falillahi al-akhiratu wal-ula
Rather, to Allah belongs the
Hereafter and the first [life].
53:25

فَلِلَّهِ
But for Allah
falillahi

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ
(is) the last
l-ākhiratu
Noun
وَٱلْأُولَىٰ
and the first
wal-ūlā
وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍۢ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ
Wakam min malakin fi as-samawati la tughni shafa'atuhum shay'an illa min ba'di an yadhana Allahu liman yasha'u wayarḍa
And how many angels there are in the heavens whose
intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.
53:26

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ
Inna alladhina la yu'minuna bil-akhirati layusammuna al-mala'ikata tasmiyata al-untha
Indeed, those who do not believe in the
Hereafter name the angels female names,
53:27

in the Hereafter

ٱلْأُنثَىٰ
(of) female
l-unthā
وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًۭٔا
Wama lahum bihi min 'ilmin in yattabi'una illa aẓ-ẓanna wa-inna aẓ-ẓanna la yughni mina al-ḥaqqi shay'a
And they have thereof no
knowledge. They follow not except assumption, and indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all.
53:28

Fa-a'riḍ 'an man tawalla 'an dhikrina walam yurid illa al-ḥayata ad-dunya
So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our message and desires not except the worldly life.
53:29

فَأَعْرِضْ
So turn away

تَوَلَّىٰ
turns away

Our Reminder

وَلَمْ
and not

يُرِدْ
he desires

ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ
the life
l-ḥayata
ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ
Dhalika mablaghuhum mina al-'ilmi inna rabbaka huwa a'lamu biman ḍalla 'an sabilihi wahuwa a'lamu bimani ihtada
That is their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided.
53:30

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَى
Walillahi ma fi as-samawati wama fi al-arḍi liyajziya alladhina asa'u bima 'amilu wayajziya alladhina aḥsanu bil-ḥusna
And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the
earth - that He may recompense those who do
evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best [reward] -
53:31

ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌۭ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ
Alladhina yajtanibuna kaba'ira al-ithmi wal-fawaḥisha illa al-lamama inna rabbaka wasi'u al-maghfirati huwa a'lamu bikum idh ansha'akum mina al-arḍi wa-idh antum ajinnatun fi buṭuni ummahatikum fala tuzakku anfusakum huwa a'lamu bimani ittaqa
Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him.
53:32

ٱلْإِثْمِ
sins

ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ
the small faults
l-lamama
Noun
رَبَّكَ
your Lord
rabbaka
Noun
وَٰسِعُ
(is) vast
wāsiʿu
Noun
ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ
(in) forgiveness
l-maghfirati
Noun
أَعْلَمُ
(is) most knowing about you
aʿlamu
Particle
بِكُمْ
(is) most knowing about you
bikum
Verb
أَنشَأَكُم
He produced you
ansha-akum
Noun
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
l-arḍi
Particle
وَإِذْ
and when
wa-idh
Noun
أَنتُمْ
you (were)
antum
Noun
أَجِنَّةٌۭ
fetuses
ajinnatun

بُطُونِ
(the) wombs

أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ
(of) your mothers

So (do) not

Have you seen the one who turned away
53:33

أَفَرَءَيْتَ
Did you see

تَوَلَّىٰ
turned away

وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًۭا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ
Wa-a'ṭa qalilan wa-akda
And gave a little and [then] refrained?
53:34
Verb
وَأَعْطَىٰ
And gave
wa-aʿṭā

قَلِيلًۭا
a little
qalīlan
Verb
وَأَكْدَىٰٓ
and withheld
wa-akdā
أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ
A'indahu 'ilmu al-ghaybi fahuwa yara
Does he have knowledge of the
unseen, so he sees?
53:35
Noun
أَعِندَهُۥ
Is with him
aʿindahu
Noun
عِلْمُ
(the) knowledge
ʿil'mu
أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ
Am lam yunabba bima fi ṣuḥufi Musa
Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses
53:36

يُنَبَّأْ
he was informed

(the) Scriptures

وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ
Wa-Ibrahima alladhi waffa
And Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] -
53:37

وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ
wa-ib'rāhīma

وَفَّىٰٓ
fulfilled
waffā
أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌۭ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ
Alla taziru waziratun wizra ukhra
That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another
53:38

أُخْرَىٰ

Wa-an laysa lil-insani illa ma sa'a
And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives
53:39

وَأَن
And that

لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ
for man

سَعَىٰ
he strives (for)
saʿā
وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ
Wa-anna sa'yahu sawfa yura
And that his effort will be seen -
53:40

وَأَنَّ
And that
wa-anna

سَوْفَ
will soon
sawfa
ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ
Thumma yujzahu al-jaza'a al-awfa
Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense
53:41

يُجْزَىٰهُ
he will be recompensed for it

ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ

وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ

And that to your Lord is the finality
53:42

وَأَنَّ
And that
wa-anna

your Lord

ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ
(is) the final goal
l-muntahā
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ
Wa-annahu huwa aḍḥaka wa-abka
And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and weep
53:43

وَأَنَّهُۥ
And that He
wa-annahu
Verb
أَضْحَكَ
makes (one) laugh
aḍḥaka

وَأَبْكَىٰ
and makes (one) weep
wa-abkā
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا
Wa-annahu huwa amata wa-aḥya
And that it is He who causes
death and gives life
53:44

وَأَنَّهُۥ
And that He
wa-annahu

وَأَحْيَا
and gives life
wa-aḥyā
وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ
Wa-annahu khalaqa az-zawjayni adh-dhakara wal-untha
And that He created the two mates - the male and female -
53:45

وَأَنَّهُۥ
And that He

وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ
Min nuṭfatin idha tumna
From a sperm-drop when it is emitted
53:46
Noun
نُّطْفَةٍ
a semen-drop
nuṭ'fatin
Verb
تُمْنَىٰ
it is emitted
tum'nā
وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ
Wa-anna 'alayhi an-nash'ata al-ukhra
And that [incumbent] upon Him is the next
creation53:47

وَأَنَّ
And that
wa-anna

عَلَيْهِ
upon Him
ʿalayhi

ٱلنَّشْأَةَ
(is) the bringing forth

ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ
another
l-ukh'rā
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ
Wa-annahu huwa aghna wa-aqna
And that it is He who enriches and suffices
53:48
Particle
وَأَنَّهُۥ
And that He
wa-annahu
Verb
أَغْنَىٰ
enriches
aghnā
Verb
وَأَقْنَىٰ
and suffices
wa-aqnā
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ
Wa-annahu huwa rabbu ash-shi'ra
And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius
53:49
Particle
وَأَنَّهُۥ
And that He
wa-annahu

(is the) Lord

ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ
(of) Sirius
l-shiʿ'rā
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ
Wa-annahu ahlaka 'Adan al-ula
And that He destroyed the first [people of] '
Aad53:50
Particle
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ
And that He
wa-annahu

أَهْلَكَ
destroyed

ٱلْأُولَىٰ

وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ
Wathamuda fama abqa
And
Thamud - and He did not spare [them],
53:51

أَبْقَىٰ
He spared
abqā
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍۢ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ
Waqawma Nuḥin min qablu innahum kanu hum aẓlama wa-aṭgha
And the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and more transgressing.
53:52

وَقَوْمَ
And (the) people

Indeed, they

وَأَطْغَىٰ
and more rebellious

وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ
Wal-mu'tafikata ahwa
And the overturned cities He hurled down
53:53

وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ
And the overturned cities
wal-mu'tafikata
Verb
أَهْوَىٰ
He overthrew
ahwā
فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ
Faghashshaha ma ghashsha
And covered them by that which He covered.
53:54
Verb
فَغَشَّىٰهَا
So covered them
faghashāhā
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تَتَمَارَىٰ
Fabi-ayyi ala-i rabbika tatamara
Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt?
53:55

فَبِأَىِّ
Then which (of)
fabi-ayyi

رَبِّكَ
(of) your Lord

تَتَمَارَىٰ
will you doubt

هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ
Hadha nadhirun mina an-nudhuri al-ula
This [Prophet] is a warner like the former warners.
53:56

ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ

أَزِفَتِ ٱلْـَٔازِفَةُ
Azifati al-azifah
The Approaching Day has approached.
53:57

أَزِفَتِ
Has approached

ٱلْـَٔازِفَةُ
the Approaching Day
l-āzifatu
لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ
Laysa laha min duni Allahi kashifah
Of it, [from those] besides Allah, there is no remover.
53:58

كَاشِفَةٌ
any remover
kāshifatun
أَفَمِنْ هَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ
Afamin hadha al-ḥadithi ta'jabun
Then at this statement do you wonder?
53:59

afamin

وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ
Wataḍḥakuna wala tabkun
And you laugh and do not weep
53:60

وَتَضْحَكُونَ
And you laugh
wataḍḥakūna

وَلَا
and (do) not
walā
وَأَنتُمْ سَـٰمِدُونَ
Wa-antum samidun
While you amuse yourselves [in vanity].
53:61

وَأَنتُمْ
While you
wa-antum

سَـٰمِدُونَ
amuse (yourselves)
sāmidūna
فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩
Fasjudu lillahi wa'budu
So prostrate to Allah and worship [Him].
53:62
Verb
فَٱسْجُدُوا۟
So prostrate
