“The neighbor complained to the Prophet (ﷺ), who asked the owner to sell him the tree. He refused. The Prophet (ﷺ) then offered him a tree in Paradise in exchange for it, and he still refused. Abu ad-Dahdah, a companion, heard this and bought the tree from the owner for a whole garden of 40 trees, and then gifted the tree to the Prophet (ﷺ) to give to the poor neighbor. It was upon this contrast between the stingy man and the immense generosity of Abu ad-Dahdah that these verses were said to be revealed.”
